The former Newcastle United and current Atlanta United maestro turned to engage Turkey defender Mert Müldür in a heated exchange, deliberately shielding his lips with his hand as he spoke.
Müldür immediately stepped away from the confrontation to alert match officials. Following an instant video assistant referee (VAR) intervention, El Salvadoran center referee Iván Barton conducted an on-screen pitchside monitor review.
Barton returned to the pitch to brandish a straight red card to a stunned Almirón, reducing the South American squad to ten men just before the halftime whistle blew.
