A major institutional crisis has officially hit the upper echelons of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) following a controversial statement by a splinter faction purporting to suspend the group's supreme leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The radical announcement, issued by the Directorate of State (DOS) faction under the leadership of Chikadibia Edoziem, claimed that the decision was finalized during a high-profile structural review meeting on June 17, 2026.
According to the faction, an internal intelligence report compiled by IPOB's specialized M-Branch allegedly exposed unapproved strategic dialogue sessions between Kanu and state officials—including representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA)—inside his current detention facility.
In addition to the suspension, the Edoziem-led group announced Kanu's immediate removal as director of the influential broadcast station, Radio Biafra.
Edoziem argued that the sweeping measures were necessary to protect diaspora-funded structures, curb unauthorized exercises of centralized authority, and halt suspected plans to set up a parallel militia force that could disrupt stability across the South-East region.
The faction noted that any legal infractions or operational activities carried out under the banner of the supreme leader's office would henceforth be blamed strictly on individual instigators rather than the main movement.
However, the main body of IPOB, speaking via its veteran National Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, swiftly crushed the defection claims, classifying Edoziem's actions as an outright organizational nullity.
Powerful countered that Kanu had already utilized the supreme powers vested in him by the official IPOB Code of Conduct to entirely dissolve the "third administration" led by Edoziem, replacing them with a brand-new "fourth DOS administration" spearheaded by Chris Nwaọgụ.
The core leadership stressed that under the movement's binding governing rules, the authority to appoint, suspend, or terminate administrative officers rests exclusively with the Office of the Supreme Leader.
Labeling the Edoziem-led declarations as "foolish and delusional," Emma Powerful directed all coordinators, local operational units, and global media outlets to completely ignore any statements originating from the dissolved group, warning that any internal elements attempting to subvert Kanu's ultimate command structure will face immediate structural expulsion.
