The intense internal crisis rocking the opposition Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has shifted from a political dispute into a monumental multi-billion naira legal warfare.
Former Executive Governor of Imo State, Chief Achike Udenwa, has officially slammed a fierce legal demand on prominent African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and Nollywood actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo.
In a three-page legal demand notice dated June 11, 2026, and signed by his lead counsel, Chief Soronnadi Njoku (SAN), the former governor is demanding a whopping N5 billion in general damages alongside a sweeping, unreserved public retraction for highly defamatory extortion allegations made during a live global television broadcast.
The massive judicial threat emanated from a controversial live political interview aired on Channels Television on Monday, June 8, 2026.
During the broadcast, Okonkwo—who previously served as the official campaign spokesperson for NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi before a bitter fallout—alleged that elite leaders of the party's South-East caucus, including Onyema Ugochukwu, Achike Udenwa, and Peter Obi, were actively extorting massive financial sums from regional political aspirants through intimidation, violence, and institutional compulsion.

Through his senior advocate, Governor Udenwa maintained that Okonkwo's televised statements were a malicious collection of falsehoods designed to destroy his hard-earned national reputation and falsely portray him as a common criminal who leverages raw political influence for illicit monetary gains.
The legal notice hands Okonkwo a strict seven-day ultimatum to write a strongly worded retraction, to be published across five major national daily newspapers and broadcast during peak prime-time hours on Channels TV, coupled with a legal undertaking never to slander the elder statesman again.
“Most regrettably, your defamatory statement against him, accusing him of illegally securing money from aspirants by compulsion and violence... has greatly injured our client in his credit and reputation and portrayed him as a common criminal," the legal document stated.
"Take notice that if the above demands are not strictly met within the stipulated time frame, we have his instructions to commence legal proceedings against you in the appropriate High Court in Imo State."
This development mirrors a parallel legal action launched by Peter Obi, who has similarly demanded N5 billion from his former ally over the exact same broadcast.
Undeterred by the massive impending litigations, a defiant Kenneth Okonkwo dismissed the demands via his official X handle, uploading private WhatsApp chat logs shared with Ohaegbu to validate his claims, setting the stage for one of the most explosive political defamation trials in Nigeria's contemporary democratic history.
