The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a formal investigation into a viral video that shows an unidentified man brazenly spraying large wads of naira notes on a live cow inside a church in Warri, Delta State, an act that constitutes a criminal abuse of the national currency.
Confirming the development to Saturday Punch, the EFCC's spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated that the agency was aware of the controversial footage. “The matter is under investigation,” Oyewale said, signaling the commission's intent to clamp down on the incident.
The now-viral video, which has sparked widespread outrage on social media, captures the moment an unidentified man, accompanied by a female companion holding a large stack of cash, sprayed various denominations of naira—including N200, N50, and N20 notes—onto a dark-colored cow. The event appeared to be a thanksgiving service at the church.
Despite the sacred setting, the atmosphere was charged with secular energy. While the church's pastor sang in Urhobo, a hype man repeatedly hailed the individual as a “young billionaire” in Pidgin English, urging the congregation to acknowledge him, as hip-hop music blared in the background.

The video has drawn fierce criticism from social media users, many of whom condemned the act and the setting in which it occurred. An X user named Fortis commented, “This is very offensive to watch. More worrisome is the fact that children are even in this congregation. This is indeed disgraceful.”
Another user, Asiegbu O. Odenigbo, wrote, “Yahoo boy doing thanksgiving in a yahoo church for the yahoo pastor,” insinuating that the source of the wealth may be illicit. This incident is part of a recurring pattern of naira abuse at social and religious events, a practice explicitly prohibited by Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act. The EFCC has recently intensified its efforts to prosecute such offenses, aiming to uphold the dignity of the national currency.
