Lai Muhammed shuts down Kwara for granddaughter’s wedding (Photos)

The minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed has shut down Oro town, in Kwara state for his granddaughter’s wedding.
Kemi Filani reports that Lai Mohammed’s granddaughter Toyosi wedded Gbolahan Sambo in a traditional ceremony held at the minister’s residence on Thursday in Oro, Kwara State.

Lai Mohammed’s political allies stormed the occasion to show their support.
Addressing pressmen at the ceremony, Mohammed stressed that his political structure in Kwara remains intact and cannot be sunk.

“I am glad you noticed that I have here today the same people I have been working with within the last 20 years politically in Kwara.
“Though they tried to pluck me away from them, we interact regularly and we have almost become a family.

“I am not surprised even though I am delighted that they turned out in their numbers today to share with me the joy of this occasion.
“What this means fundamentally is that there is no difference politically between me and them and they still regard me as one of their leaders and I still regard them as my associates,’’ he said.

The minister reiterated that notwithstanding the disagreement in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, his supporters and allies were still loyal to him.

“My political structure cannot be torpedoed because of disagreement. That is the essence of political structure: when you are strong enough to weather the storm that will necessarily come up, especially when it is time to vie for political offices,’’ he said.

Speaking on the marriage, the minister said the Yoruba culture revers the traditional rites as the most important marriage.
“As you can see, the bride was handed over to the parents of the groom which signifies that marriage is not just between two individuals but between families, communities, and at times two kingdoms.

“This is important because every member of the families the communities or kingdoms must ensure the marriage does not hit the rocks,” he said.

Davido’s son: Autopsy likely as police free 6 workers, detain 2 of his workers

The Lagos State Police Command might conduct an autopsy to determine whether the death of three-year-old Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of popular musician, Davido and his fiancée, Chioma Rowland, was as a result of drowning in a swimming pool.

The police have also released six domestic workers and detained two others detained over the unfortunate incident at Davido‘s residence in the Banana Island area of Lagos State.

According to PUNCH, a source, who confirmed the development, said it was standard practice for the police to conduct an autopsy in such a case, adding, however, that the police would desist from the move if the deceased family members were against it.

“Though the family members are not saying anything yet because they are still in shock but until anybody says stop, the standard procedure is to conduct an autopsy and we are going to follow that procedure just like in any case of death,” the source said.

2023: 2face, Tiwa Savage, Nkem Owoh, Wizkid others mum as Obi, Tinubu divide celebrities

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, several music, movie and comedy stars are working to ensure that their preferred presidential candidates clinched the top position in the country. However, some of the top stars seem to be sitting on the fence.

DAILY POST reports that most celebrities who decided to show interest in the forthcoming presidential election are either supporting the All Progressives Congress, APC, flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu or the candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Some of the celebrities were conspicuously seen during recent rallies for Obi and Tinubu in Lagos State.

Despite a warning issued on September 24 by the leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) declaring that its members endorsing political candidates are not representing the interest of the organisation, many actors have continued to sell their candidates.

Recall that Nollywood actors, John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, Harry B Anyanwu and others had prior to primary elections, endorsed the former Lagos State governor.

A video on social media showed the duo openly drumming support for Tinubu, saying he has really impacted on people and deserves to be president of the country.

The comic actor, Ibu was, however, slighted with Peter Obi during a rally in Jos, Plateau State a few months ago, also drumming support for the former Anambra Governor.

Several performing artists, including Zark Orji, Jide Kosoko, Gentle Jack, and about 21 other actors were listed in the 422-member Presidential Campaign Council of the ruling party.

Similarly, veteran Nollywood actors Kanayo O. Kanayo, Keneth Okonkwo amongst other top celebrities had declared their support for the Labour Party’s candidate Peter Obi.

Peter and Paul Okoye of the P-Square and other music stars have openly declared support for Obi as they continue to mobilize support for him.

Aside the singer and DMW boss, David Adeleke, popularly called Davido who played a great role in the emergence of Ademola Adeleke as the Osun State Governor recently, some top celebrities, including Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2face, Tiwa Savage, Ayodeji Balogu, known as Wizkid and others have remained silent.

Also, notable movie stars, including, Nkem Owoh, Yul and Peter Edochie, Ramsey Nouah, Mercy Johnson, Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G and several others seem to be working underground for their preferred candidates.

However, an Abuja-based music producer, John K., who spoke to DAILY POST on Thursday, said Davido may be working for Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

“Davido is a PDP supporter and we don’t expect him to be working for a candidate of another party. He is very close to Atiku and he can’t leave him for another candidate,” he said.

Mr John called on Nigerians to ensure that they vote intelligently in 2023, stressing that any mistake by the electorate may cost the nation another four years of stagnation.

“For me, I am Obidient but I pray we don’t vote for the wrong people this time because Nigeria can’t afford to make that mistake again. It is time to take back our country”, he said.

Fela Kuti, who used 'music as weapon', honoured in Paris

The son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti spoke of his father's bravery in using "music as a weapon" ahead of an immersive exhibition opening at the Paris Philharmonic on Thursday.

"Instead of picking up a gun, music was the only tool he had. It was a weapon to use against authority, against colonisation and corrupt African governments," said Femi Kuti, 60, himself a hugely successful musician.

The Paris Philharmonic is paying homage to Fela Kuti by recreating the atmosphere of his sweaty, politically-charged nightclub in Nigeria, The Shrine, that became a beacon for global stars in the 1970s including Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney.

Kuti died from AIDS complications in 1997, but his pioneering work remains as potent as ever, frequently cited by today's stars such as or Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Beyonce and Jay-Z who sampled his hit "Zombie" on "Homecoming Live".

"I'm not surprised. Great people like Miles Davis already talked about Fela," said Femi Kuti of his father's continued popularity. "Afrobeat was the basic element of hip-hop, it's where hip-hop got its sauce from."

Fela's politics have also remained potent.

"When we started working on this exhibition project, the Black Lives Matter movement emerged and Fela's fight in the 70s and 80s found resonance there," said Alexandre Girard-Muscagorry, one of the curators of the immersive exhibition.

Kuti was harassed throughout much of his life by the military authorities in Nigeria for his relentless criticism of their corruption and violent misrule.

There was a particularly vicious reaction after he refused to take part in an official music festival in 1977, instead organising a parallel event that became much more popular and attracted international stars including Stevie Wonder.

- 'Out of Africa' -

Soldiers responded to his counter-festival by burning down his home and pushing his mother out of a first-floor window, causing injuries which led to her death a year later, Femi Kuti said.

"He was a voice for the voiceless, the only opponent who was brave enough to tackle the hardcore military dictators at that time and he paid a very high price," said Femi Kuti.

But it was ultimately the genius of his music that made him so popular, creating something entirely new with its mix of free-jazz, soul, funk and Yoruba.

McCartney was one of many inspired to come to The Shrine in Lagos, where he recorded his album "Band on the Run".

"Fela came out of Africa with this incredible sound that caught the ears of everybody," said his son.

"To use this music as a political weapon and message -- that caught the attention of the world and especially France, maybe because of the connection to its own rebellions."

In a race for financial inclusion, SKY Girls penetrates Nigeria’s market

SKY Girls, a Pan African empowerment movement has launched in Nigeria in a bid to increase financial inclusion for teen girls between the ages of 12-19.

The event which took place on Saturday in Lagos state was attended and endorsed by Folashade Adefisayo, Commissioner for Education, Lagos.

The girl focused movement, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was first launched in 2014 in Botswana and now active in Ghana, Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia and Nigeria.

It focuses on creating edutainment content for teenage girls in order to empower them and increase their resilience and confidence.

We are expanding financial inclusion in Nigeria so that young girls can understand the role it plays in finance and their lives, says Alice Railton, SKY Girls Market Lead, Ghana and Nigeria.

“We are building the movement now by getting them involved through financial awareness so that they can start to have the understanding and the importance of savings later in life,” Railton said.

She also added that a lot of the girls we have spoken to can start saving, budgeting and understanding the importance of it. “There is so much inequality for girls and women in that area. So, we are trying to correct that.”

The initiative would include messaging around financial decision-making, education and knowledge, to improve the girls and their families overall future life skills.

Apart from providing them with financial education, the movement would also reduce tobacco uptake.

“The movement is fuelled by its desire to reduce the worrying uptake of tobacco amongst adolescent girls by reaching girls through multiple online and offline channels, from magazines, social media, radio, TV shows, feature-length films, school clubs and community events,” said Adenike Odutola, General Manager Operations, 7even Interactive for SKY Girls Nigeria

“Within this platform and through role models, SKY integrates tobacco messaging in such a way as to make NOT SMOKING the aspirational choice,” Odutola further added.

Adefisayo applauded the programme for the laudable feat and encouraged young girls and their parents to take advantage of the various opportunities tied to the initiative.

“It is impossible to quantify the magnitude of importance of such a programme in today’s world. The odds are often stacked against young girls in developing countries, but here, SKY is showing the girls while still in their formative years how to be more confident and make positive decisions that would potentially set their lives towards the right trajectory.

I invite parents and guardians to avail their teenage girls the chance to be a part of this programme. We might not be able to change the world in an instant, but we can do so, one girl child at a time.”
