According to Channels TV online, prominent lawyer and security analyst Bulama Bukarti has asserted that the tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in bandits' custody highlights an alarming level of criminal boldness.
General Abubakar, a highly visible institutional figure and former Director of Defence Information, died from medical complications linked to diabetes and hypertension after being held for two weeks.
Bukarti noted that the tragedy sent massive shockwaves across the country and the international community, serving as a grim indicator that rank, status, and extensive institutional history offer zero protection in the face of current insecurity.
Abubakar and his wife were not seized in an isolated forest hideout, but were ambushed on a busy public highway within the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Rather than hiding their high-profile captive, the criminal network led by bandit leader Kachalla Muhammadu boldly paraded the frail officer on digital media spaces to broadcast their demands.
The gang openly attempted to force a prisoner exchange, demanding the release of three detained syndicate associates and the return of seized livestock from the federal government.
Bukarti concluded that the entire operation follows the foundational blueprint of classic terrorist psychological warfare, where the main objective extends far beyond securing immediate ransoms.
By targeting a prominent former military spokesperson who once led the state’s information war against insurgents, the bandits achieved a strategically symbolic victory designed to terrorize the populace.
He warned that unless the state decisively dismantles these bold negotiation tactics and restores total authority over public transit links, such high-profile losses will continue to severely erode public trust in the government’s capacity to protect its citizens.
