Argentina legend Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football at age 39, closing the curtain on a historic career with La Albiceleste.
The iconic forward made the announcement on Instagram on Monday, following Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the July 2026 World Cup final.
Messi, who captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022 alongside back-to-back Copa América titles, noted that the decision was deeply painful but necessary.
Following the tragic passing of his father Jorge in August 2026, Messi admitted having serious doubts about continuing long-term international play.
He will, however, fulfill his club commitments with Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, where his active contract runs until the end of the 2028 season.
