Tragedy struck Gidan Kare village in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State after bandits ambushed residents, killing an Islamic teacher, injuring one person, and abducting at least 10 others.
Local sources revealed that the bandits hid inside a primary school in the morning of Thursday, August 27, 2026, waiting for villagers who had spent the night in nearby Tureta town to avoid night raids.
As residents returned to their homes around 8:00 AM, the gunmen opened fire.
The deceased, identified as Mallam Abubakar Danjimme, was shot dead, while another resident, Dan Abu, sustained injuries.
Among those abducted were twins Hassana and Hussaina, Mallam Dan Manga, Shehu, Badaru, Saratu, and two children of Mallam Ayuba. Community members have called on security agencies to launch clearance operations in the surrounding forest reserves to neutralize the bandit networks.
"They knew that the villagers sleep in Tureta and return in the morning. So they planned the attack and hid in a primary school in the village... They started shooting, killed one person, beat others and abducted some." — Anonymous Gidan Kare Resident
