The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched an investigation into its digital records after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)—the political party of 2027 presidential contender Peter Obi—accused the commission of publishing unauthorized candidates on its official lists.
NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas publicly raised concerns over ten constituencies in Anambra State, as well as locations in Imo and Benue states, alleging that validly nominated party candidates were systematically replaced with unknown "imposters."
In response, INEC Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola clarified on Monday that the commission lacks the legal authority to nominate or swap party candidates.
Oketola explained that the candidate nomination portal maintains an immutable electronic audit trail, assuring that an objective review of portal access credentials will determine whether unauthorized changes occurred or if internal party submission errors took place.
