Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has hailed a major ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja as a historic triumph for constitutional democracy and a firm rejection of persistent attempts by external political actors to destabilize Nigeria's opposition coalition framework ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Musa Liman dismissed a suit filed by a member of the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, which sought to nullify the July 2025 transition that brought former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola into office as the National Chairman and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Justice Liman upheld preliminary objections raised by the party, ruling that the court lacked jurisdiction over the internal affairs of a political party.
The judge slammed Abejide's legal team with a hefty fine, ordering the lawmaker to pay ₦2 million to each defendant and his counsel to pay ₦10 million for engaging in judicial adventurism.
"The court could not have been clearer. It rightly held that the matter borders on the internal affairs of the ADC, that the Federal High Court lacks jurisdiction, and that the plaintiffs neither exhausted the internal remedies provided by the party’s constitution nor established the locus standi required to invoke the jurisdiction of the court," Atiku stated through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.
Atiku emphasized that the legal validation of the David Mark-led National Working Committee serves as a vital shield against desperate elements operating from the corridors of power who are intent on fracturing opposition realignments.
With the ADC increasingly adopted as a strategic coalition platform for frontline politicians seeking sweeping democratic change in 2027, the former Vice-President urged all party loyalists to remain united, declaring that the rule of law will continue to frustrate institutional manipulation and state-sponsored litigation.
