Trump Signs Executive Order Renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the renaming of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" with immediate effect, escalating an ongoing trade feud with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump stated that all necessary administrative filings were completed to formalize the name change within U.S. geographic databases.

The decision follows a series of tariff disputes, including a 50% U.S. tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, which prompted Ottawa to announce retaliatory tariffs scheduled for September 8.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the renaming, noting that the name "Lake Ontario" originates from the Wendat word Ontari'io and predates both Canadian Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

"We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario, effective immediately, to Lake America. We filed all the necessary papers, documents, everything else." — Donald Trump, U.S. President
