Prominent Nollywood filmmaker and producer Biodun Stephen has pushed back against public criticism regarding romantic scenes in Nigerian movies, asserting that safeguarding actors' marriages is not the responsibility of film directors.
Speaking in an Instagram video in response to social media commentary accusing producers of damaging performers' marital stability, Stephen argued that actors and their spouses fully understand the creative demands of the acting profession before taking on roles.
While noting that intimate kissing is not central to her family-oriented brand of storytelling, Stephen emphasized that she will incorporate romantic scenes whenever narrative realism demands chemistry and believability.
She explained that actors retain the right to decline kissing roles based on personal or religious convictions, but stressed that blaming film crews for marital friction is misplaced once performers consent to on-screen romantic acts.
"My job as producer or director is to protect you as actors. My job is to present you properly to the audience without making you feel personal, but my job is not to break your home because that’s not on me. I did not put a gun on your head to work for me."
