The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that the severe delays experienced by candidates during the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) were caused by a tragic motor accident that claimed the lives of three dedicated personnel.
Issuing a formal press brief on Monday, June 8, 2026, the Head of Public Affairs for the council, Moyosola Adesina, explained that the fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, along the Gombe-Yola highway while the officials were actively transporting sensitive examination materials across state lines, severely disrupting the pre-planned distribution grid.
The unexpected tragedy resulted in late-evening test sittings for crucial subjects like Mathematics and Agricultural Science across centers in Oyo, Lagos, and Osun states last week, drawing widespread complaints from parents and students.

Adesina further noted that the operational complications were compounded by the late registration of candidates, logistical hitches, and regional civil protests linked to recent abductions of schoolchildren which heavily restricted interstate cargo movement.
While mourning the deceased staff members, WAEC assured the public that round-the-clock contingency plans have been successfully instituted to ensure the remaining examination schedule runs seamlessly until the June 19 conclusion.
