Former Sector Commander of Operation Safe Haven, Maj-Gen Anthony Atolagbe (rtd), has disclosed that Boko Haram benefits from a massive, highly organized sponsorship network operating both within and outside Nigeria's borders.
Appearing as a guest on Arise Television’s Prime Time, the retired military chief emphasized that Nigeria is fighting an internationalized counter-terrorism battle that requires deeper cross-border intelligence and regional strategic alliances.
Atolagbe highlighted that the sophisticated communication tools utilized by insurgents and bandits—such as high-speed Starlink satellite internet terminals—are likely procured outside Nigeria before being smuggled into the country and distributed across combat zones.
To effectively dismantle these networks, Atolagbe called for unified counter-terrorism strategies led by international bodies like the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and ECOWAS to track and cut off global financial pipelines supporting insurgents.
"There is a mega sponsorship for Boko Haram from within and outside Nigeria. If we are to now digress and go into that particular area, we should now be thinking about where they are being funded.
And then, when you talk about people being funded, certainly we are talking about something bigger than what we can just imagine. So, they are not only in Nigeria."
