Financial markets and equity investors are focusing on Nigerian listed stocks following FTSE Russell's official announcement of 10 "Newly Eligible" Nigerian large-cap equities for its Frontier Index Series.
The development signals Nigeria's formal re-entry into global Frontier Market status starting September 21, 2026, ending a three-year exclusion cycle that began in 2023 due to foreign exchange illiquidity:
- The 10 Newly Eligible Large-Caps: The designated flagship stocks eligible for inclusion are GTCO, Zenith Bank, First HoldCo, Stanbic IBTC, MTN Nigeria, Dangote Cement, Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, Presco, and Aradel Holdings.
- Tier Breakdowns (Mid & Small Caps): Additional Nigerian equities like Access Holdings, UBA, Fidelity Bank, and Guinness Nigeria were listed under Mid-Cap inclusions, while Transcorp and NGX Group were classified under Small-Cap categories.
- Market Impact & Inflows: The reclassification follows Nigeria's successful transition to a T+1 settlement cycle and improved foreign exchange liquidity. The move is expected to drive foreign portfolio investments (FPI) and institutional capital back into Nigerian equities.
