The Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, has sent a clear warning to the camp of the Labour Party (LP), predicting that internal structural crises and elite power dynamics will completely consume its frontline figure, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Symfoni TV’s Unfiltered Podcast, the veteran political communications expert pulled no punches, describing Obi's carefully curated public persona of extreme frugality as a performative political gimmick that actively undermines macroeconomic productivity.
The 2027 Forecast: Why Peter Obi May Not Run
Afegbua argued that Nigeria’s deeply entrenched ethnic configurations require balanced political algorithms rather than superficial branding. He openly mocked Peter Obi’s signature campaign talking points regarding his wardrobe and footwear, noting the economic irony of the narrative.
"He thought he was playing on the sentiments of Nigerians to say he's very frugal," Afegbua stated. "He says he wears one shoe. That's a killer of productivity! If you are wearing one shoe, nobody will produce shoes again. It is most likely that Peter Obi may not even contest in 2027 because I am seeing a lot of crisis in the Labour Party that will consume him. "He behaves like the Chichido bird. It's a very beautiful bird that hates stains and dirt, but it feeds exclusively on maggots. You cannot separate a clean public image from the messy realities of the political machinery supporting you."

"Whether you do well or not, the public will run negative commentaries. But once the leader leaves, nostalgia kicks in. Look at how they painted IBB to us as young journalists. But when I got close to him and looked at his structural impact across Nigeria, it was massive. Tinubu is a disruptor of deeply endemic systems. When his policy framework sinks deeper after four years, the benefits will become clear."

Shifting the spotlight to his home turf, Afegbua directly answered tough localized questions regarding recent security scares and infrastructure stewardship under Governor Monday Okpebholo:
On Akoko-Edo School Closures: Afegbua defended the decision to shut down schools following a leaked DSS intelligence report regarding mass kidnapping plots. Noting that Edo is a highly exposed transit state connecting the South-West, North, and South-East, he argued that acting proactively based on intelligence is far better than reacting after a tragedy.
On Teacher Salary Debts: The commissioner completely debunked claims that teachers or local government council workers are being owed. He revealed that since taking power, the administration has completely eliminated the third-party "consultant system" that ran the civil service down, pushed through civil service promotions that had been frozen for eight years, and successfully recruited over 5,000 new teachers and 2,000 healthcare workers.
