From APC to PDP: Iyabo Obasanjo Clinches Ogun Central Senatorial Ticket Barely Two Weeks After Defection

"I Commit Myself to PDP Ideals": Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Secures Ogun Central Senatorial Ticket on Channels TV

In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Professor Iyabo Obasanjo has officially joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and clinched the party's senatorial ticket for the Ogun Central senatorial district. The development comes barely two weeks after her high-profile resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

During an official flag-presentation ceremony at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the state working committee, party stalwarts, and supporters gathered to welcome the former senator back to the party's fold.

A Return to the Umbrella: "Welfare Over Personal Interest"

The event saw a massive turnout, heavily attended by the state's frontline opposition actors, including the PDP governorship candidate, Hon. Oladipupo "Ladi" Adebutu, and his running mate.

Accepting the party's nomination flag, Professor Obasanjo expressed her deep sense of responsibility and readiness to hit the campaign trail to secure victory for the PDP across all levels in 2027.

"I commit myself to the ideals of PDP," Obasanjo declared during her acceptance speech. "I shall serve the people of Ogun State and Nigeria with integrity, humility, and dedication—prioritizing the welfare of the people above personal and sectional interests."

Adebutu Pledges Local Government Financial Autonomy

Amplifying the legislative goals of the party's new senatorial candidate, the PDP governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, took the podium to promise a complete structural break from the current governance model in the state.

Adebutu focused heavily on transparency, pledging that his administration would fully respect and enforce absolute financial autonomy for local government councils to stimulate rapid rural development.

"You will have local government autonomy," Adebutu promised the cheering crowd. "There shall be transparency. Nobody will touch your money. You will use your money for the benefit of the people, and there shall be progress in this land. The moment government spends money as a major stakeholder of this economy, it shall be well with all of us. Your money is coming back to you."

With Obasanjo anchoring the critical Ogun Central senatorial district, the Ogun State PDP structure aims to build a formidable, unified front to wrestle power from the incumbent APC administration in the upcoming 2027 polls.
