Sokoto State has recorded another wave of deadly banditry after armed terrorists launched separate, coordinated attacks across the Goronyo and Tureta Local Government Areas, resulting in the assassination of a prominent Islamic cleric, the killing of two security officers, and the mass abduction of local residents.
In the first incident, heavily armed bandits invaded Kuda-Kuda village in Goronyo at approximately 12:58 AM on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The attackers operated unchecked for nearly two hours, shooting sporadically into private residences, rustling livestock, and forcing terrified villagers to flee into the outskirts of the town for safety.
According to local community sources, the armed gang systematically targeted the residence of the village’s Chief Imam, Liman Audu, killing him instantly before confronting three young men whom they ordered to march into the forest. When the youths resisted the command, the terrorists shot them dead on the spot.
The deceased victims have been identified as Chief Imam Liman Audu, Yahaya Hasanu, Zahara Mu’azu, and Ibrahim Dayyabu, while three other villagers who sustained critical chest wounds were rushed to a medical facility in Sokoto.
Community leaders expressed deep frustration over their vulnerability, noting that this incident marks the 11th time Kuda-Kuda village has been raided by bandit syndicates without permanent security deployment. The terrorists reportedly walked away with several captives, predominantly married women.
In a parallel security engagement in the Tureta Local Government Area, a joint security task force operating under *Operation Fansan Yamma* engaged a separate cell of armed bandits in a fierce gun battle.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Sokoto State Command, ASP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed that the joint operational team—comprising troops of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, police operatives, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel, and the Community Guards Corps—successfully thwarted the bandits' raid.
While the security forces successfully rescued 14 kidnapped victims and recovered stolen livestock and operational motorcycles, the command suffered casualties.
ASP Ahmad Rufai identified the fallen officers as Inspector Redmo Ijenwa and Police Constable Nura Muhammad, who lost their lives in the line of duty, while PC Abdulrazak Muhammad sustained severe gunshot injuries and is currently receiving clinical attention.
