Nomba Manager Arraigned Over $50,487 Cross-Border Fraud and Money Laundering

Uche Anderson Chiekea and Joy Oluchi Ani arraigned in Lagos court for $50k fraud

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has arraigned Uche Anderson Chiekea, an Agent Network Manager with Nomba Financial Services Limited, and his associate, Joy Oluchi Ani, over an alleged $50,487 cross-border fraud and money laundering scheme.

The duo is accused of coordinating illicit fund movements between Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The suspects were brought before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon-Ikoyi.

According to the six-count charge, the alleged crimes took place between February and May 2025.

Prosecutors claim the defendants conspired to divert funds, alter financial terms without authorization, and conceal the origin of the money.

Chiekea specifically faces accusations of abusing his position at Nomba.

He allegedly manipulated service fees and interest charges for customers and agents, diverting the proceeds for personal use.

During the proceedings, prosecuting counsel Clifton Onovo stated:

"The defendants knowingly converted and transferred $50,487 derived from unlawful activities, with the intention of concealing the origin of the funds."

Despite pleading not guilty, the court admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N10 million each, requiring a surety who owns landed property in Lagos.

While awaiting the perfection of their bail conditions, the judge ordered their remand at a correctional center. The trial has been adjourned to May 22 and 25, 2026.
