Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), has officially suspended the planned wedding of his autistic daughter, Chiemeka Chibuzor.
The decision follows a wave of social media backlash and concerns regarding the ethics of marrying off a vulnerable person.
The controversy began when the Apostle announced he was seeking a "young able-bodied man" to marry his 21-year-old daughter.
While over a thousand men reportedly applied—many sending videos and messages promising to care for her—human rights advocates and social media users raised alarms about Chiemeka's ability to give informed consent.
The criticism was intensified by a previous event two weeks ago, where the pastor’s autistic son, Aboy Chibuzor, was married to an older woman in a union allegedly facilitated by financial incentives.
Critics warned that the televangelist was exploiting his children's vulnerabilities.
Responding to the pressure, the church issued a statement on Facebook to halt the proceedings:
"Chiemeka Chibuzor wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding, Pending further directive from me HRM King, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere."
Despite the suspension, many members of the public are still calling for the nullification of the previous wedding involving the pastor's son.
Advocates argue that individuals who cannot effectively communicate or understand the implications of marriage are legally and morally unable to provide the necessary consent for such a union.
