Award-winning singer Omawumi has sparked a conversation on modern romance, arguing that the concept of "transactional love" is nothing new.
In a recent interview with Pulse, the 'Bottom Belle' star shared her perspective on why dating has become a hot topic in today’s society, noting that while the nature of love remains the same, the price tag has increased.
Omawumi explained that expectations in relationships have existed since the beginning of time.
However, she pointed out that inflation and modernization have changed the "currency" of courtship.
Reflecting on the difference between her youth and today, the singer noted that the cost of impressing a partner has skyrocketed.
"Love has always been transactional. Women have always been demanding since the beginning of time. But during my youth, our transaction was different because you can impress your crush with just ice cream and popcorn. But now, it is iPhone," she stated.
The singer also defended women against the stereotype of being solely money-driven, suggesting that the media often ignores how much women reciprocate in relationships.
She further suggested that men who complain about "expensive" partners often choose women with tastes that exceed their own financial reach.
