A major kidnapping attempt was foiled at the Divine Mercy Hospital in Awada, Onitsha, Anambra State, after hospital workers and a vigilant new mother busted a woman who allegedly sneaked into the maternity ward disguised as a medical worker to steal a newborn baby.
The dramatic confrontation, which was captured in a viral video, led to the immediate arrest of the suspect by law enforcement.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, officially confirmed the development, reassuring the public that the suspect is in police custody and facing rigorous interrogation.
According to witness accounts, the suspect arrived at the facility with a professional nurse’s uniform carefully concealed inside a polythene bag.

She reportedly wore or presented the attire to blend in, navigating her way into the rooms of vulnerable postpartum mothers. Her suspicious movements caught the attention of the hospital staff, who quickly began filming her while demanding her credentials.
The situation escalated when a new mother recounted how the fake nurse approached her bed to gather intelligence on her newborn child:
"She came to ask me if I gave birth to a girl or a boy," the mother explained. "I told her a boy and she told me congratulations.
I asked why she asked and she told me she's a nurse, that they just employed her in the hospital. I asked her 'since when?' and told her I've never seen her face in Divine Mercy Hospital, and she claimed she doesn't do ward rounds."
Moments later, a voice in the background of the viral footage disclosed that the suspect went outside the ward and was overheard making a suspicious phone call to an unknown buyer, asking, "Do you want a boy or a girl?" The new mother corroborated the claim, noting that she also witnessed the chilling phone conversation.
Cornered by the angry hospital staff and doctors, the woman failed to provide a logical reason for her presence, prompting onlookers to scream, "Your cup is full!" and "Child thief!" Local authorities are currently investigating the suspect’s history to trace her potential links to wider child-trafficking syndicates operating within the region.
