The internal power struggle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated into the public sphere ahead of the 2027 general elections as the Tanimu Turaki-led faction declared that it has successfully nominated former President Goodluck Jonathan as its official presidential flagbearer.
Speaking during the formal presentation of certificates of return to various gubernatorial candidates in Abuja, the National Organizing Secretary of the faction, Theophilus Shan, revealed that Jonathan duly purchased, signed, and submitted the required nomination forms.
Shan proudly asserted that all subterranean efforts orchestrated by unnamed internal and external interests to frustrate or completely halt Jonathan's clearance ultimately hit a brick wall.
The Turaki faction declared full operational readiness for the upcoming general elections, announcing an expansive nationwide candidate template across multiple administrative tiers.
According to the factional leadership, the PDP is prepared to field 28 governorship candidates in states with scheduled off-cycle and general executive elections, alongside 109 senatorial candidates, 360 candidates for the federal House of Representatives, and 993 candidates across various state Houses of Assembly.
Backing the choice of the former president, Turaki confidently stated that no candidate from any opposing political platform, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), possesses the national appeal or political pedigree to match Goodluck Jonathan at the polls.
However, delivering a remarkably fiery address at the party’s parallel 109th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, heavily rebuked party members, urging them to immediately discard what he termed a deeply ingrained "culture of entitlement."
The former Rivers State governor admonished aspirants and stakeholders to brace themselves for a bruising, aggressive grassroots mobilization strategy if they genuinely intend to reclaim central power from the incumbent administration.
"Nobody gives power. Nobody has done it. Power is taken. If you do not struggle for it, it is your business. Nobody is ready to dash you power. You have to fight for it. You have to struggle for it," Wike boldly challenged the gathering of party leaders.
Using a colorful and blunt familial analogy, the FCT Minister likened the PDP's current identity crisis as an opposition party to that of a once-wealthy family struggling to adjust after years of unchecked abundance.
He argued that during the party's historic sixteen-year reign at the federal level, many members grew up acting like spoiled children who relied entirely on daily provisions from their father.
Wike noted that now that the "father is sick," many stakeholders are paralyzed by fear and lack the necessary courage to build an aggressive, independent political machinery capable of wrestling power away from a sitting government.
