The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has identified foreign counterfeit syndicate operations within Nigeria's borders as a major cause behind the surge in adulterated, fake, and harmful consumer goods.
Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, revealed that Chinese counterfeiters who previously produced fake items abroad have now established local production plants and covert logistics channels inside Nigeria.
This shift allows illicit operators to identify trending local products, manufacture knockoffs internally, and distribute them without leaving the country.
Following public outcry over fake consumer items—such as daily care products, oral hygiene brands, and bottled drinks—NAFDAC confirmed multiple arrests across Kano, Sokoto, Delta, and Anambra states, noting a record 64 convictions achieved between mid-2025 and mid-2026.
