Senate in Turmoil: Lawmakers Confront Oshiomhole Over Bitter NNPCL Corruption Remarks
The Nigerian Senate descended into a heated confrontation during a recent plenary session following a controversial statement made by a ranking lawmaker.
The upper legislative chamber was thrown into visible tension as members debated the boundaries of parliamentary language used during official investigative hearings.
The drama unfolded after a video emerged of a committee session where the state-owned oil firm was openly castigated.
According to Arise News online, former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, sparked massive outrage after labeling the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) a "house of thieves."
Oshiomhole made the stinging declaration during a Senate Committee on Public Accounts session investigating an alleged unaccounted ₦210 trillion in the company’s audited reports between 2017 and 2023.
His furious remarks instantly drew the ire of Senate leadership, with many colleagues demanding an immediate retraction.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to formally dissociate the red chamber from Oshiomhole’s aggressive conduct, arguing that the parliament's oversight powers must be exercised with immense responsibility.
While several lawmakers took turns to blast the Edo Senator, labeling his choice of words as reckless and demanding a public apology, a defiant Oshiomhole fiercely defended his actions.
He argued that he was merely reacting to NNPCL officials who attacked the integrity of the Senate by accusing lawmakers of seeking job slots for their children.
Despite an attempted point of order to silence him, several sympathetic lawmakers shouted in solid support of Oshiomhole, exposing a deep division within the chamber.
Ultimately, the Senate adopted leadership prayers to nullify an arrest warrant previously issued against NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.
However, the lawmakers strictly dismissed an additional prayer attempting to strip the Public Accounts Committee of the massive ₦210 trillion probe.
