Multi-award-winning Afrobeats pioneer Peter Okoye, widely known to global music audiences as Mr P, has issued a sharp, uncompromising response to online critics and ageist fans who have actively been demanding his immediate retirement from the music landscape.
The heated discourse erupted after a cross-section of social media users claimed that the 44-year-old singer, who rose to prominence as one-half of the legendary defunct pop duo P-Square, is now "too old" to be actively recording and performing contemporary Afrobeats music.
Addressing the continuous pushback during an exclusive live interview with The Beat FM Lagos on Saturday, June 13, 2026, a defiant Mr P dismissed the retirement narrative entirely, labeling it a toxic agenda cooked up by individuals who are single-mindedly praying for his professional downfall.
He emphasized that the global creative space does not operate like a traditional corporate office with mandatory retirement ceilings.
“We should be careful of how people try to put others down. There’s no retirement in music," Mr P asserted during his radio segment. "I don’t know why some people think there’s retirement in music.
Michael Jackson was over 50 and was still planning a world tour before he died. It’s only in Nigeria that somebody would just wake up and start calling on musicians to retire. I have seen some people do the same thing to Wizkid.”
