Nigeria’s institutional footprint within global diplomacy and international development received a massive geopolitical boost on Friday evening, as United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres officially announced the high-profile appointment of veteran Nigerian diplomat and development expert, Ahunna Eziakonwa, as his new Special Adviser on Africa.
The elite appointment was publicized via an official UN directory statement, confirming that Eziakonwa will formally replace Cristina Duarte of the Republic of Cabo Verde.
The UN Chief expressed his immense gratitude to Duarte for her decades of unwavering commitment, resilience, and dedicated service to the global organization during her executive tenure.
Eziakonwa brings an unassailable profile consisting of nearly 30 years of direct, front-line United Nations leadership to her new high-ranking global desk.
Prior to this historic appointment, she served distinctively as the UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator, and Regional Bureau Director for Africa under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In that heavy capacity, she strategically masterminded and oversaw the agency's cross-border development interventions across 46 African sovereign states, guiding various national cabinets through the execution of the UN’s Agenda 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the African Union’s ambitious Agenda 2063 framework.
The new Special Adviser’s field experience cuts across the entire operational spectrum of United Nations strategic stabilization efforts.
She has previously served as the UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator, and UNDP Resident Representative across three critical regional economic anchors—Ethiopia, Uganda, and Lesotho—where she managed multi-million dollar humanitarian portfolios, long-term development blueprints, and high-level political mediation.
At the UN headquarters in New York, Eziakonwa previously served as Chief of the Africa Section at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), where she directly navigated complex emergencies across 15 African nations, including key field roles in Liberia and Sierra Leone during delicate post-conflict transitions, making her uniquely qualified to steer Africa's contemporary socio-economic renaissance.
