Islamic Teacher Set Ablaze in Maraban Jos After Asking Children for Directions

A horrific display of unchecked mob justice has thrown the community of Maraban Jos in Kaduna State into deep mourning following the brutal killing and burning of an Islamic teacher, Malama Ummulkhairi, on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The stomach-churning tragedy has sparked immense public outrage across the state, bringing renewed criticism against the rising societal menace of jungle justice, lawlessness, and the fatal speed at which malicious rumors spread on social media channels.

According to verified statements from devastated family members and community associates, Malama Ummulkhairi, a respected mother of more than five children, had traveled out from her neighborhood in New Maraban Jos to attend an Islamic lecture organized at a local school in the old Maraban Jos axis.

After the religious gathering concluded, she reportedly became separated from her companions and lost her way in the unfamiliar streets. In a bid to find her bearings, she approached a group of local children to ask for directions—a routine action that local alarmists instantly misinterpreted, falsely accusing her of being a child kidnapper.

"The Kaduna State Police Command strongly condemns this barbaric act," State Police Spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, announced during an emergency media update.

"Police officers had moved the woman into custody for her safety and to investigate the allegation against her before a large, lawless mob aggressively stormed the police station, overwhelmed the officers on duty, and forcibly removed her from protective custody."

Despite frantic efforts by family members who rushed down to the station to present identification documents confirming her status as an Islamic educator, the bloodthirsty crowd completely rejected peaceful dialogue.

The mob beat the defenseless woman to death before dragging her remains into the street and setting her body on fire.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, issued a stern public warning declaring that the command will maintain absolute zero tolerance for jungle justice and direct assaults on state police formations.

Informing the public that a high-level counter-surveillance operation has already resulted in the successful arrest of several key suspects captured participating in the lynching, the command promised that all individuals involved in the fatal assault will face the full weight of the law.
