High-stakes political pandemonium erupted around the high-security parameters of the Eagle Square in Abuja on Friday, June 12, 2026, as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force fired multiple tear gas canisters at close range to forcefully disperse a peaceful Democracy Day demonstration led by prominent human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) 2027 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.
The active demonstration was organized by a broad coalition of civil society organizations as a critical nationwide mobilization designed to demand immediate governmental action against rampant national insecurity, economic hardship, and worsening domestic living standards.
The demonstrators were peacefully marching from the popular Berger Bus Stop towards Eagle Square when tactical police units suddenly moved in, firing chemical irritants to block their advance.
The volatile encounter was captured in a viral social media video, which showed terrified demonstrators fleeing to safety through thick clouds of smoke, while a gasping Sowore was seen collapsing to the bare ground before being rushed away to a nearby hospital by his supporters.

Taking to his official X account shortly after recovering consciousness, the AAC chieftain fiercely accused the President Bola Tinubu administration of deploying increasingly dangerous and unlawful tactical methods to destroy political dissent.
"Today, operatives of the Nigeria Police Force deployed a strange gas at the protest ground, at close range, which entered my lungs and left me struggling to breathe before I eventually collapsed," Sowore stated online.
"The objective of the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime is to silence, destroy, and crush all opposition through fear and force. We shall never succumb to any of his worn-out tactics."
The sudden tactical escalation drew sharp international and local criticism, with global rights watchdog Amnesty International immediately publishing an uncompromising statement via social media condemning the "reckless and unlawful attack on peaceful protesters."
The human rights organization maintained that the deliberate and targeted choking of political activists is a flagrant violation of the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights obligations, demanding an immediate, comprehensive independent investigation into the operation.
While the FCT Police Command has yet to release an official incident report, the clash has further amplified regional socio-economic tensions on Nigeria's symbolic Democracy Day.
