The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has stated that Nigeria’s ongoing kinetic military campaigns against terrorism, rural banditry, and asymmetric insurgency remain difficult because criminal elements continue to receive deep financial and intelligence backing from local sponsors and collaborators within the targeted communities.
Speaking on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the prestigious 2026 edition of The Platform Nigeria—an annual national discourse hosted by the Senior Pastor of The Covenant Nation, Pastor Poju Oyemade, to commemorate Democracy Day—the defense chief addressed a national television audience on the core themes of governance, democracy, and national security.
General Musa maintained that armed militias rely heavily on internal informants for baseline survival necessities.
"The terrorists and bandits survive among the people," General Musa asserted during his presentation.

"There are several stories of how people have aided them by giving them food, water, and information, and these are the things that keep them going. We call this the oxygen.
Who are those funding them? Who are those giving them information? Who are those providing the logistics that keep them going? It is still the people.
The most dangerous aspect of battles or campaigns is when the enemy is within."
The Minister maintained that unlike historical conventional warfare fought between clearly defined opposing states, modern internal security threats are driven by individuals hiding behind civilian armor, warning that no amount of military procurement can substitute for localized civic patrio-responsibility.
Sharing the national stage, former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki shifted the focus toward institutional checks and balances as a key pillar of national stability.
Saraki argued that a rubber-stamp legislature that accepts executive proposals without independent verification fails its constitutional duty.
He noted that the political independence of the National Assembly is not an act of rebellion against the Presidency, but a necessary process to establish legitimate, transparent, and trusted democratic governance across the federation.
