The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has claimed that the Federal Government’s latest cross-appeal in the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has severely fractured the legal framework of his conviction and brought the jurisdiction of the trial court into question.
In an official legal press statement issued on Sunday, June 7, 2026, by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group argued that the prosecution's cross-appeal effectively concedes key procedural errors regarding the trial court’s jurisdiction during the sentencing phase.
IPOB maintained that judicial jurisdiction must be treated as an indivisible continuum throughout a criminal trial, rather than an administrative buffet that can be adjusted across different stages of prosecution.
The legal conflict stems from the long-running terrorism-related charges brought against Kanu by the Federal Government.

While the Court of Appeal had famously discharged Kanu in October 2022 over an unlawful extraordinary rendition from Kenya, the Supreme Court subsequently set aside that order, mandating a trial on the merits which led to his current conviction and remand at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
IPOB insists that the upcoming Court of Appeal review must address massive procedural defects, including the alleged use of repealed laws and a denial of fair hearing.
The group has called on human rights organizations, international diplomats, and legal experts to closely monitor the proceedings, describing the situation as a critical litmus test for constitutional safeguards within Nigeria's criminal justice system.
