Generational Disconnect: Hon. Dachung Bagos Warns of Imminent Stewardship Gap in Nigeria's Democracy
Nigeria's continuous democratic transition is facing a profound crisis of generational interest as the younger demographic increasingly detaches from conventional governance structures. As national stakeholders analyze the fallout of recent civic events, seasoned lawmakers are raising alarms over the systemic lack of historical knowledge available to citizens. Without an intentional structural framework to mentor upcoming leaders, the entire nation risks completely losing its hard-fought political legacy.
According to Channels TV online, a former member of the House of Representatives, Honorable Dachung Bagos, revealed that the current political elite is failing to successfully hand down the baton of stewardship to the next generation.
Bagos observed a stark disconnect during the recent Democracy Day celebrations, pointing out that while the vast majority of Nigerian youths completely ignored President Bola Tinubu's national broadcast, they heavily engaged with and shared viral social media protest clips from activist VeryDarkMan (VDM). He noted that this development clearly demonstrates where the true attention and passion of the contemporary youth population reside.
The former lawmaker strongly blamed the political class for failing to establish sustainable developmental policies over the past 27 uninterrupted years of democracy, resulting in a complete erosion of trust, character, and institutional accountability. To fix this dangerous leadership recruitment deficit, Bagos highlighted past legislative motions from the ninth assembly aimed at returning history to the national educational curriculum.
He emphasized that younger generations cannot protect a democratic struggle they know nothing about, especially when regional leaders who entered government as youths several decades ago refuse to step aside.
In concluding his analysis, the former representative maintained that political parties across the APC, PDP, and NDC remain shortsightedly obsessed with winning immediate elections rather than building progressive leadership institutes for the future.
He urged older statesmen to prioritize institutional mentorship, cautioning that recycling identical, unfulfilled promises of basic infrastructure since 1960 will never inspire patriotic confidence. He further noted that pressing issues like insecurity and state policing must be addressed with concrete, lasting policies to revive the dying hope of the nation’s youth.
