The viral storm erupted immediately after Arsenal Football Club clinched the Premier League title—sparking a dramatic intersection of intense football rivalry and Nigerian church culture.
The online backlash was triggered by a resurfaced sermon clip from April where Pastor Dolapo, an open Manchester United supporter, was seen engaging in playful pulpit banter.
In the clip, he jokingly teased the Gunners fans in his auditorium, declaring that Arsenal would never win the league title and insisting he didn't need a prophecy to know the club was "cursed."

He even jokingly warned female members to avoid dating Arsenal fans, calling it a "bad sign." However, following Arsenal's historic league triumph—their first league title in 22 years—social media blogs clipped the video, framing it as a "failed divine prophecy."
The resulting uproar forced the cleric to issue a formal public apology and clarification video. In his response, which was met with lighthearted commentary from the wider Christian community (including reactions touching on Pastor E.A. Adeboye’s son’s celebration of the win), Pastor Dolapo explicitly clarified that his statements were pure football banter ("cruise") and never an official "thus saith the Lord" prophecy.
