Why is Benue News Trending?

Political tension has gripped north-central Nigeria as the All Progressives Congress (APC) concluded its highly competitive House of Representatives primary elections in Benue State

The state has topped online trends due to a series of shocking upsets, high-stakes family dynamics, and major structural shakeups within the ruling party.

The primary results have fundamentally altered the state’s political landscape ahead of the general legislative elections.

A major driver of the trend is the headline-making victory of the Akume political dynasty

Regina Akume, the wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, alongside her daughter, successfully secured the APC tickets for their respective federal constituencies.

Their victories have sparked intense debate among political analysts regarding the consolidation of family influence within the Benue APC structure.

Simultaneously, the primaries were characterized by a massive sweep against incumbent lawmakers.

Out of the numerous aspirants who jostled for the coveted tickets, five sitting members of the House of Representatives failed to secure their return tickets, losing out to fresh political challengers.

This wave of defeats indicates a strong desire for legislative change among party delegates and grassroots members. The news continues to trend as aggrieved aspirants weigh their options, putting Benue at the center of national political conversations.
