Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially announced his departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement released via X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, May 3, 2026, Obi cited the "toxic" nature of Nigeria’s political landscape and worsening internal conflicts within the party as the primary reasons for his exit.

Obi revealed that while he maintains deep respect for party leaders like Senator David Mark and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he could no longer ignore the "infiltration of unresolved conflicts" and recurring legal battles that have distracted the ADC from national issues.
“I am not desperate to be President or Senate President. I am desperate to see a Nigeria where people live in dignity,” Obi declared, maintaining his signature mantra that "a new Nigeria is possible."
