WhatsApp Business is trending across corporate, startup, and financial media following Meta's announcement of a new global pricing structure set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
The policy shift will significantly impact how medium-to-large corporate entities manage customer communications:
- Per-Message Service & Utility Fees: Meta will end free allowances for service messages and utility notifications sent within the 24-hour customer service window on the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). Utility messages (such as order updates, delivery alerts, and bank transaction receipts) will incur per-message fees of roughly $0.0101 per message (₦14), while marketing messages will cost $0.062 per message (₦84).
- Impact on High-Volume Sectors: Banks, fintechs, logistics providers, and e-commerce platforms that rely on automated WhatsApp messages are facing sharp operational cost increases. A business sending 500,000 monthly utility messages could see Meta fees rise to $5,050 (~₦6.8m) before third-party provider fees.
- Small Business Exemption: The update primarily impacts corporate users of the enterprise API; standard WhatsApp users and small businesses using the free standalone WhatsApp Business mobile app are unaffected. Meta warned that API accounts without an active payment method on file by September 30 will face message delivery suspensions.
