The Abia State Police Command has smashed a sophisticated, inter-state child trafficking ring, leading to the safe rescue of two minors and the immediate arrest of three female suspects.
The highly coordinated tactical operation was executed by security operatives attached to the Akwete Divisional Police Headquarters.
According to an official statement released on Sunday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the breakthroughs were achieved following a combination of actionable intelligence and active collaboration with local community vigilante groups.
The initial arrest took place on May 10, 2026.

The police statement identified the principal suspect as 30-year-old Vera Imiobong Udoyang, a native of Akwa Ibom State who resides in Ozoaporo, Okrika, Rivers State.
Upon interrogation, Udoyang confessed to tracking and abducting the two young children after luring them away from their familiar surroundings using donuts and soft drinks.
Further investigation by detectives exposed an organized chain of illegal supply lines, resulting in the subsequent arrest of her accomplices: Chioma Duru Ukanwoke, 40, from Imo State, and Ezinne Ukandu, 41, from Abia State. DSP Chinaka noted:
“Preliminary investigations further revealed that the suspect Vera Imiobong Udoyang was allegedly recruited through a chain of contacts involving the other two suspects, with claims that an unidentified welfare officer, simply known as 'Chioma,' who is currently at large, coordinated efforts to source male children for possible illegal adoption.”
The command confirmed that the three suspects remain in secure police custody, while intense manhunt operations have been launched to track down the fleeing welfare officer.
The two rescued children have been successfully reunited with their biological parents, while the case files have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for deep prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, strongly urged parents, guardians, and school authorities to drastically increase their security vigilance.
He warned families to strictly instruct their children never to accept edible items, gifts, or rides from strangers, advising the general public to quickly utilize the command's emergency hotlines to report any suspicious individuals seen loitering with infants.
