Why I Wore a 500-Loaf Bread Dress: BBNaija’s Queen Speaks Out on Viral AMVCA 12 Outfit

BBNaija reality star Queen Mercy Atang wearing the viral 500-loaf bread dress designed by Tiannah Empire for AMVCA 12

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Queen Mercy Atang has opened up about the excruciating physical toll behind her viral "bread dress" at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

The reality television star stunned onlookers when she appeared at the prestigious industry event wearing an avant-garde gown meticulously constructed from 500 actual loaves of bread.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the BBC, Atang clarified that the viral masterpiece was conceptualized and created by celebrity stylist Toyin Lawani of Tiannah Empire.

While the structural garment dominated digital fashion conversations across West Africa, Atang revealed that the sheer weight of the bread almost broke her waist and left her with a severe physical wound on her back.

"I literally cried while wearing that dress," Atang recounted. "The first few seconds after wearing the dress, I had to take it off and cried a lot. Then later, I told them I was ready to wear it again."

According to the entrepreneur, the highly unconventional fashion statement was initially suggested by her designer as a tactical, subtle marketing promotion for her business brand.

Atang admitted that she had initially chosen to skip this year's AMVCA to focus entirely on pending corporate milestones. However, Lawani successfully convinced her to attend, strictly forbidding her from wearing a simple or conventional outfit to the high-profile gathering.

Despite arriving at the venue well after the official media red carpet had closed for the evening, Atang insisted on making a physical appearance inside the hall.

She explained that she felt compelled to be seen live by attendees to counteract inevitable social media skepticism.

"I did not want to post the picture online alone, so people would not say it was AI-generated," Atang concluded, expressing surprise that major mainstream news platforms picked up the story globally.
