Fela Kuti’s Music Catalogue Remains Under Family Ownership, Femi Kuti Confirms
Grammy-nominated artist Femi Kuti has set the record straight regarding the ownership of his late father’s legendary music catalogue.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Entertainment Tonight, Femi confirmed that the family has retained full control of the Afrobeat pioneer’s work through the Fela Kuti Estate.
While many global icons have opted to sell their publishing rights for massive payouts, Femi explained that the Kuti family chose a different path.
Instead of a total sale, the family opts for licensing agreements, which allow them to retain long-term ownership while still generating revenue.
“We never sold it. It’s under Fela’s estate, which is controlled by the family. We license the music, so we control it,” Femi stated.
Femi credited his elder sister for being the primary guardian of the legacy, noting her staunch opposition to selling the catalogue.
He emphasized that keeping the music within the family ensures both dignity and a sustainable inheritance for future generations of the Kuti lineage.
