Tragedy struck the Eda Oniyo community in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State on Tuesday evening, as gunmen suspected to be bandits attacked a religious gathering.
The violent invasion resulted in the death of a pastor and the abduction of several worshippers, including children and the elderly.
Witnesses told Tribune Online that the heavily armed bandits stormed the outskirts of the town around 7:00 pm while an open-air crusade was in progress.
The gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, forcing the congregation to scatter in panic.
A local community leader shared, “They shot the pastor and into the congregation... taking them into the forest.”
The Chairman of Ilejemeje LGA, Pius Alaba, confirmed the incident, noting that while about 50 people attended the program, the exact number of those kidnapped remains unknown as many fled into the bush.
The slain pastor’s remains have been moved to the morgue. Security agencies have been alerted, though the state police command has yet to release a formal statement regarding the ongoing search for the victims.
