The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is dominating national news headlines across Nigeria following a resolution by its National Executive Council (NEC) authorizing branches across 20 public universities to issue a mandatory 14-day ultimatum to federal and state authorities ahead of planned industrial action.
The decision was finalized following an executive NEC meeting held at the University of Abuja, presided over by ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna.
The union expressed deep dissatisfaction with what it termed the "haphazard implementation" and "lackadaisical attitude" of the Federal Government and various state university visitors regarding the landmark 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement.
Signed in December 2025 after more than 16 years of protracted negotiations, the historic pact was designed to bring permanent industrial peace to Nigeria's public university system through structured funding frameworks, a 40% upward review in academic staff remuneration, and dedicated allowances like the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA).
However, union leaders reported that despite official government declarations in early 2026 regarding commencement of the pay review, actual disbursements have been erratic, inconsistent, and completely ignored by several state governments overseeing state-owned tertiary institutions.
The 20 affected branches instructed to issue the two-week ultimatum include Nasarawa State University (Keffi), University of Medical Sciences (Ondo), Adekunle Ajasin University (Akungba), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (Lapai), Gombe State University, Plateau State University (Bokkos), Ambrose Alli University (Ekpoma), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (Okitipupa), Abia State University (Uturu), Kaduna State University, and Kano State University of Science and Technology (Wudil), among others.
Beyond salary backlogs and subvention delays, ASUU highlighted the non-implementation of agreed Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), delays in constituting the official Implementation Monitoring Committee, and unaddressed campus security and administrative concerns.
The union confirmed that an emergency NEC meeting will be convened in late August or early September 2026 to evaluate government compliance before enacting coordinated, indefinite walkouts across affected campuses.
