The political viability of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 election has sparked debate following recent statements by Ambassador Abdul Danbature, National President of the Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership.
Danbature claimed Obi cannot achieve the presidency without consulting and securing the backing of Northern youth.
In response, political analyst Abba Gwale argued that Obi remains competitive across northern constituencies.
Gwale highlighted that Obi secured significant support in 2023, particularly among Northern Christian demographics and youth voters.
He added that strategic partnerships, such as a prospective alliance with Rabiu Kwankwaso, could solidify electoral prospects in key states like Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, and Katsina.
However, Gwale noted that shifting political dynamics, including efforts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to win over opposition figures, mean the NDC campaign must adapt its regional strategies.
