The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a massive investigation into the management of several Nigerian universities over allegations of contract inflation and the diversion of student registration fees.
The EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, revealed these findings on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, during the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-owned Universities conference in Kano.
He disclosed that several former and current Vice-Chancellors are being scrutinized for betraying the trust of students and taxpayers.
“Just this last week, I had a call to file a charge against a vice chancellor who just left the system,” Olukoyede stated, highlighting the scale of the rot.
In a startling revelation, the anti-graft czar also noted that approximately six out of every ten university students in Nigeria are currently involved in cybercrime.
He described the situation as a "sad development," noting that some students have become so wealthy from fraud that they allegedly place their lecturers on a monthly payroll, further compromising academic integrity.
