Senegal Stripped of 2026 AFCON Title; Morocco Declared Champions After Final Walk-Off
In an unprecedented move that has sent shockwaves through the football world, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially stripped Senegal of their 2026 Africa Cup of Nations title.
The trophy has instead been awarded to the host nation, Morocco, following a successful appeal by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).
The controversy stems from the chaotic final held in Rabat on January 18, 2026.
Deep into stoppage time, with the score at 0-0, a penalty was awarded to Morocco via VAR.
In protest, several Senegalese players walked off the pitch, causing a nearly 20-minute delay. Although they eventually returned and went on to win 1-0 in extra time, CAF has now ruled that the walk-off constituted a forfeit.
“The Senegal national team is declared to have forfeited the match,” CAF stated, citing Articles 82 and 84 of the AFCON Regulations. The official result has been revised to a 3-0 victory for Morocco.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has reacted with fury, describing the decision as "unjust, unprecedented, and unacceptable."
The federation confirmed it will immediately file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne to defend the rights of the "Lions of Teranga."
While Morocco maintains the appeal was strictly about the application of competition rules, Senegalese stars like Moussa Niakhaté have taken to social media to protest, with Niakhaté posting a picture of the trophy captioned "they're mad."
For now, Morocco is officially recorded as the two-time champions of Africa.
