Kenya’s former Foreign Minister, Raphael Tuju, has officially resurfaced, ending 24 hours of intense speculation and fears that he had been abducted by unknown assailants.
Speaking candidly to Citizen TV on Monday, Tuju revealed that he deliberately went into hiding after noticing he was being pursued by an unmarked vehicle in Nairobi.
The drama began on Saturday evening when Tuju and his driver were reported missing while en route to a radio interview.
Police later discovered his vehicle abandoned with hazard lights flashing in the upmarket suburb of Karen.
According to reports from Kenyan security agencies, Tuju’s phone had been switched off, further fueling concerns of a state-sponsored abduction.
Tuju explained that he chose to abandon his car and seek refuge in a secure location rather than involving the police immediately, citing a lack of trust in certain institutions.
“My family is very traumatized and I consider myself blessed because there are many Kenyans in unmarked graves. I branched off onto a road where it would be more difficult to follow me and abandoned the car they were looking for,” Tuju stated.
The former minister has been locked in a bitter $15 million legal battle over the attempted auction of his properties.
He recently alleged that powerful officials were attempting to seize his assets illegally.
While the government has yet to comment on these specific claims, opposition figures like Kalonzo Musyoka have hailed his safe return while warning of an "abduction squad" operating within the capital.
