Fear has gripped the residents of Owerri, the Imo State capital, following the brutal murder of a Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator by unidentified gunmen.
According to Punch, the victim, identified as Daniel, was shot dead on Sunday evening, March 22, 2026, near the Everyday Supermarket in the World Bank area of the city.
Daniel, an indigene of Ndegwu in the Orogwe community, was reportedly working at his business stand when the assailants accosted him.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen demanded his cash bag and opened fire when he attempted to resist.
The robbers fled the scene immediately after the shooting with an undisclosed amount of money.
Local sources revealed that Daniel was the only son of his family and was still struggling to recover from a previous robbery before this fatal encounter.
Philip Dike, a resident of the area, noted that PoS agents have become primary targets for criminals in the New Owerri and World Bank axes.
“This young man was a POS operator stationed near the Everyday Supermarket. He was shot dead by armed robbers on Sunday night. There is a growing trend of POS agents being targeted; the police should act swiftly,” Dike urged.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Imo State, DSP Henry Okoye, has acknowledged the report and stated that the command is working to confirm the full details of the incident.
Residents have called for increased patrols around business clusters to prevent further loss of life.
