Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa has officially resumed his role as the National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at the union's headquarters in Abuja.
His return follows a definitive ruling by the Court of Appeal, which upheld an earlier judgment sacking Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, from the position.
The leadership tussle, which has plagued the union for over two years, reached a climax after the National Industrial Court (NICN) and the Court of Appeal concurrently affirmed Baruwa's election.
As confirmed by the certified true copy (CTC) of the judgment, the appellate court dismissed the challenges filed by opposing factions, labeling their appeals as lacking merit.
Addressing journalists during his peaceful takeover of the national secretariat, Baruwa emphasized that his return was backed by the rule of law.
“We are a law-abiding union whose only mission is to take back what belongs to us. Today, we are taking over in a peaceful manner. We have waited for two years for this day, even though the former executives refused to obey court orders,” Baruwa said.
The General Secretary, Comrade Suleiman Abdulkadir Musa, noted that the police had been formally notified of the court-ordered resumption.
Despite reports of a minor skirmish where one member was injured, Baruwa maintained that the union remains open to reconciliation to ensure stability within Nigeria's transportation sector.
