A suspected motorcycle thief has died after being beaten and set on fire by an angry mob in Magbon Village, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to Punch news, the incident, which occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, sparked outrage as residents watched the suspects chase the victim from the Ola Imam Bus Stop before cornering him near a bush.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers used sticks to assault the man, inflicting a severe head wound before pouring petrol on him and setting him ablaze.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that although the victim was still breathing when officers arrived, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
“On Friday, March 20, 2026, police responded swiftly to a mob attack in Elepete, Ogijo, where a severely injured victim was rescued but later died in the hospital. Three suspects have been arrested,” Babaseyi said.
Local residents intervened to stop the fire from completely consuming the man, and they eventually helped the Ogijo Police Division apprehend three of the primary suspects.
The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
Authorities continue to warn against "jungle justice," urging the public to hand suspects over to the police for formal prosecution.
