Human rights activist Deji Adeyanju has called on lawmakers to make DNA testing compulsory before birth certificates are issued in Nigeria.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Adeyanju argued that mandatory DNA verification would help curb paternity fraud, which he described as a growing social problem across the country.

The activist urged the National Assembly to consider introducing a bill that would enforce DNA checks for every newborn before parents can obtain a birth certificate. His proposal has ignited conversations online, with many Nigerians supporting the idea, saying it could prevent disputes and protect fathers from raising children that are not biologically theirs.
“DNA fraud is destroying families and trust in marriages,” Adeyanju said. “If the government makes DNA testing a prerequisite for issuing birth certificates, it will drastically reduce cases of deception and family breakdown.”

While many Nigerians applauded the suggestion, others raised concerns about affordability and accessibility, especially for families in rural communities where DNA testing facilities may be scarce or expensive.
