In 2017, scientists in the United States successfully sustained premature lambs for weeks using fluid-filled “biobags,” proving the concept of ex-utero gestation. However, Kaiwa Technology’s breakthrough lies in integrating this technology into a fully interactive humanoid robot capable of hosting, managing, and sustaining a pregnancy from conception to delivery.

Dr. Zhang noted during the conference that the scientific groundwork is strong, and the next challenge is developing a robot sophisticated enough to manage the full gestational process. The artificial womb will mimic natural conditions, including amniotic fluid and an umbilical cord-like system to provide oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.
The potential cost of this innovation is estimated at 100,000 yuan (£11,000), significantly cheaper than traditional surrogacy methods, making it a more affordable option for couples struggling with infertility.
